The Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. was formed in the early 1990's to do community-based language research and other types of heritage work. We have had many members over the years, some of whom have passed on. Their input will always be valued and never forgotten.

One of the biggest projects we are working on is known as the ‘Adnyamathanha’ project which is funded by the National Heritage Trust and administered through the Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. This project looks at mai (edible or medicinal bush plants) that Adnyamathanha Yuras knows about and where it is or was located in Adnyamathanha yarta (land).

The main aim of the project is to establish discussion among Adnyamathanha about caring for plants and animals of cultural and environmental significance in the northern Flinders Ranges.  It will also explore culturally appropriate ways that are widely recognised and respectful of Adnyamathanha values and beliefs.

The Adnyamathanha project aims to: preserve and protect native flora and fauna as a priority, facilitate a series of workshops and field trips, document information collected, collect seeds and propagate plants, and coordinate a strategy for the replanting program.

Important Issues about the Adnyamathanha project are: Natural springs – Where are they and in what condition; Land clearing – recent and historic; Tree planting – revegetation of areas identified as significant; Pollution – caused through development e.g. Mining; and Tourism – impact of humans, vehicles, etc.

This study may identify some ways of improving practices and/or policies in natural resource management. Work will be done through Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. in a respective and non-threatening way according to research guidelines, and the project is expected to be completed in 3 years.

You can take part in our project by coming on one of our field trips, doing an interview, being part of a small group discussion, or by giving guidance to others working on the project.

Membership is open to any Adnyamathanha person and the Yura Language Consultative Group Inc. encourages young people to join our group but they must ensure that the Elders and their views are respected according to Adnyamathanha tradition.  If you wish to join, please call the project officer, Mrs. Enice Marsh on 08 8662 2438.
